School Workshops/Performances

Introduce mixed-ability dance to your students and school.  Inspire students to work creatively as an integrated group.  Propeller Dance programs are available for integrated and special needs classes.

Workshops utilize the DanceAbility methodology, a dance improvisation methodology specifically designed for teaching integrated groups of people with and without disability.

The classes begin with a circle, where introductions are made, safety guidelines are given and examples of what constitutes "movement" are modeled.    In PROPELLER DANCE classes, a shift in eye gaze or a finger pointing towards the sky is considered a valid and legitimate movement vocabulary from which to work from.

Artistic staff of Propeller Dance, along with dancers from the Propeller performing group,  introduce dance concepts such as space, timing, body isolation and qualities of movement, through movement improvisation exercises.   Each class allows time for large group exercises, individual movement and small group work.  Each class ends in a circle, where students can reflect on their movement experience through words, silence or sound.  If time permits for preparation, some PROPELLER DANCE sessions end with a group demonstration for parents and/or other school students and staff.  Curriculum links to the K-12 grade levels are made available to teachers.

Performances showcase members of Propeller Dance’s performing group.  Dancers from Propeller Dance act as role models, demonstrating their artistic skills to inspire students new to dance and disability.  Performance pieces and demonstrations are age-specific.   Interactive sections engage both able-bodied students and students with disabilities.    We all have something to learn from the dancers of Propeller Dance.
